My truck... 1989 F250 with a 351 and a c6 tranny. It has 4.10 gears and is getting 6mpg in the city and 8 on the highway. Mileage:31,000. Everything has been maintained, you know, the usual, new plugs, dist. cap, wires, new fuel filter... Mods: K&N FIPK, cat back glass pack exhaust and 33'' tires. All the fluids are full sythetic, tranny was serviced a couple months ago, everything was fine in that area. No codes except for a 33 (EGR valve). this gas mileage sucks and i would like to know if anyone thinks they can help me on this issue. Alot of you have been giving me ideas and i really appreciate that, but nothing has worked so far .
I suggested you install a new fan clutch, have you tried that yet? Here is a quick way to see if that is your problem. Just remove the fan blade from the clutch (it is held on by 4 bolts) leave the fan clutch in place tho. take it for a short ride where you don't have to worry about getting stuck in traffic (as long as you are able to maintain speed you won't over heat). If your motor sounds better and feels less strained then your fan clutch is not disengaging and that eats up fuel.
How wide are those 33s? I think you need to check your timing chain and see if it's got some play in it. You may only have 31k miles but it's still over 20 years old. There are going to be worn out parts on it.

The motor didnt seem to feel any different when i did this. In a way it did sound a little quieter, but thats because there was no fan im assuming

The tires are 33x12.50x16.5. I know for a fact these aren't helping me out at all with this problem, but i just adopted these tires. I had the stock tires (235/85/16) on before these and the mileage deff wasnt any better.
I'll check the timing chain. Thanks. does anyone think an aftermarket distributor upgrade would be a good move?
I have to agree on the copper plugs. You're TFI ignition system was designed for copper plugs not platinums. I ran them (plats) for about three days in a '92 E150 with a 351w. It ran like crap. I put regular motorcrafts (copper plugs) back in and it ran like new.
