2016 F-350 diesel crewcab. I'd like to get a reader or scanner for getting error codes, and hopefully some information for those times when the check engine light comes on or some other abnormal condition is reported. I don't need a super-duper diagnostic monster 'cause I'm not likely be fixing it. I just want information that will help me determine what's going on, and whether I"m going to be sitting by the road side in the next few miles.
I didn't find any recent discussions of decent, hopefully reasonably inexpensive units. I can find articles with recommendations for the "best", and Amazon has all sorts of them from $80 Ancel BD310 to $190 Innova 6100P, and everything from $13 to $400. HOPEFULLY, I'll NEVER need to use it, so I want something fairly simple to use and pretty idiot-proof. What are people using for getting basic information?
I'm thinking something more generic than the forscan. Other car is a Hyundai and it would be good to be able to scan the offspring and grandson(s) cars...
At the moment I'm looking at the Autel AutoLink AL539 as one that appears reasonably capable and cost effective.

Just buy one of the recommended adapters, they're not brand-specific and they usually come with software that works on almost anything.
That way, if yoiu have questions that are specific to Ford's system or concerns, you can speak a common application with anyone else around here that also uses it.
I use the Torque Pro app and an OBDMX+ bluetooth dongle. The app can be used on your phone and the entire setup can be used on any vehicle with the OBD port. Dongle is on Amazon and the app can be downloaded from the app store.
If you just want to be able to read and maybe reset codes on older OBD2 vehicles, a cheap scanner with a readout is all you really need. They don't give you any diagnostic data but as OP is looking for, they're universal and give you an idea of what's going on.
If you DO want to be able to get diagnostic data and also make programming changes, from what I understand ForScan is a very good product, you'll just need an adapter or two.
