R12 Adapter

Ok, I have never run into anything so stupid in my life. I cannot find an adapter that will fit both fittings on my AC system. I converted the system over about 5 years ago with all new everything. I bought all of my hoses new from LMC. At the time the AC tech had a bit of a problem with the High side adapter(small), said it would not fit. 5 years later I am trying to get the AC recharged and no one has an adapter for the AC. So I have now purchased 3 sets of f***king adapters and none of them fit the small adapter. All are 7/16 female adapters and everyone is telling me that is what it is supposed to be. Its not, Its 3/8 or 1/4" and I cannot find an adapter to screw on it. Please someone tell me where I can find an adapter. The turds at the AC shot ruined the threads on my last hose so I had to replace the whole setup again and I am not going to put up with this **** much longer. What do I do?

I would have to see what kit I used. It might be a couple days until I can get back to the shop.

I lost my adapter(s) years ago, and ended-up just buying another manifold gauge set specifically for R-134a.

Which makes sense when you consider the chance, however unlikely that may or may not be, of cross contamination.

Come to think of it, I think I tried to find adapters myself, but gave-up. Maybe they're not available anymore?

Maybe we are thinking about two different things. I thought the OP was talking about the adapters that screw onto low and high pressure ports on the vehicle.

And I'm thinking about the adapters that to go from the old "standard" Schrader-style fittings to the R134a specific thread (pitch) and size (diameter) so a guy can use his "old school" manifold hoses, if he needs to.

Sh**! Now I'm getting confused myself, as I had to work on my BIL's Honda Pilot a couple summers ago, and if I remember correctly that one used a fitting that was like the quick release on your air tools!

I'm getting too old for this. Not to hijack the thread, but ever since Carrier, Daikin, Trane, et al, came out with their new "EPA friendly" (cough, cough... "EPA mandated" ) refrigerants this year for Residential & Commercial HVAC use, I've decided I'm done with trying to keep up, and my Universal Certificate is just going to have to expire. I just bought a 3 ton air/air heatpump for my house (R410a), and at 60 years of age, I have all of the tools and refrigerant I need to keep it going until I die.

Same with R12, R134a, R22, R404a, and R407a. I'm all set (I do some volunteer HVAC work for some non-profits around here), and I'll let the young guys deal with the new refrigerants, some of which are actually flammable.

End of rant, and my apologies to the OP. Hopefully he(?) comes back and explains these adapters better.

Jim

You do not need the high side access port much anyway
I recharge vehicles and never even hook up the red high side hose unless i need to check compressor output pressure
Just evacuated and recharged a Galant yesterday without hooking up the high side hose

Coldhose.com will have what you need.

Agreed, just charge low side. My old V90 Volvo had no high side port stock. These like 38oz of 134A. 11oz oil , PAO is better than Ester or PAG. If you have a big tube condenser, seek out a small tube or parallel flow. It will drop high side quite a bit for better cooling.

True but that still does not solve the OP’s issue. How is he going to check the high side without the adapter?

I have a butt load of extra R12 to R134a adapter fittings
Post a picture of your high side service port and I'll check my selection and maybe send you one
It should be just the normal one in the kit with 4 in it to do GM vehicles too
Done so many of both GM and Fords over the years that I have extra fittings for both

This is the kit I used.

It was a four pack. The other two from the kit are obviously on the truck.

Ok, for the latest. I took my truck to an Auto AC specialist. The ones that sell all the compressors we buy on the internet. They had a guy that had a fitting to screw directly onto my threaded fitting. He attached it and hooked up the vacuum pump and cleared it then refilled it. It freezes my butt of on the lowest setting now. Its never been this good. He found that the last AC guy installed the orifice filter upside down and used too much oil. This thing is like better than new and no leaks. The adapters are heading my way but I am just going to give them to the next owner to install. Truck runs great.
