I swapped a 79 250 high pinion Dana 44 into my 1970 250.
Im trying to find the fluid capacity of gear oil for this axle. I’d fill it up to the bottom of the fill hole, but it just seems to high in the case. Attached is a picture.
X2 what the manual says, I bet if you use that stated amount and then let it settle and you stick your pinky in there it will touch the fluid. Some say fill to the bottom of the fill hole. Also check you axle vent rubber line for being open and not clogged up.
I wonder if filling it to the hole isn't over filled, just looking at the tubes in relation to the fill plug. Might be why some have such leaks out the ends?
The axle seal leaks (as I have seen it) are normally caused by a plugged axle vent tube line. Mud daubers are notorious for clogging up mine anyway. Remember the axle tube ends do not have a seal. The seal is on the inside ends of the axle tubes, close to the ring gear/carrier. Well on each side of that.
That does seem high. I didn't notice when I filled mine up recently. Just went to the bottom of the fill hole. 79 D44 high pinion in my 75 F250 78 D44 high pinion in my bronco.
