I do not have an oil leak, but while fixing suspension components I noticed the oil pan gasket is popped out in several areas. It looks like an older rubber based gasket.
From looking at it, I am super confused how Im not spewing oil everywhere, so it must be an excess flap that separated from the sealed area... but im leaking no oil....
is it possible to replace the gasket on a 4x4 300 6cyl without dropping any front end components? I dont need to remove the pan, just drop it enough to slide in a new gasket.
It will soon be leaking profusely.
Those silicone rubber pan gaskets have been doing that since 1988
Very hard to get the engine lifted up enough to get the pan off
Replaced a few hundred of them myself
Hard job but pays well is you know the tricks
Trick 1 is let it sit for half a day with the pan off to drain most of the oil out
Trick 2 is to glue the gasket to the engine block and put silicone in the corners
Trick 3 is getting the pan back on there in 12 minutes before the silicone starts to set up
Good luck
Felpro has a nice once piece unit for the 4.9, that is what is going back on mine here. I have used them on various engines over the years with good success.
So I looked up repair videos of the oil pan gasket and its identical visibly to what my gasket condition is so its just a matter of time before it leaks terribly.
I cant really figure out whats going on to cause that, but either way it appears to be very common to have the gasket push out away from the pan. I might swap the oil pump while im in there but with a engine hoist I think this will be next on my to do list.
Flat piece of wood against oil pan also works with your floor jack.
You may need motor mounts, I did. You also might need exhaust manifold studs, I did. Fresh SV/SP oil pump not a bad idea. Consider a front main seal while that far in there.
My oil pan is definitely leaking so this will get done soon. Looks fairly straightforward to be honest, hope after this I can work on cosmetic issues and get this thing sold!
My 4.9 cork gasket has been pushed out on the sides for many years. Very little leak. Never have to add any oil between changes, Oil level never goes down that I can tell.
I know Fel-Pro oil pan gaskets sometimes have these large protruding tabs presumably to keep the gasket in place while installing the pan, OP, is it possible that's what you're seeing? Best of luck to you, sometimes it's just easier to remove the engine rather than trying to sneak around everything from down below...
