Hi there. Got a 76 f250 4x4, 390 with np435, big tires and looking to make it slightly baja ready. Still a big heavy truck that will be used in road frequently. Looking to replace the flywheel in the truck but having issues deciding on the weight of a new flywheel. I don't know if the one I just pulled out from when my dad had it is stock or not, weight a good amount so wanna assume it's the stock 38 lbs summit says the stock flywheel weighted. I'd like to go to a steel aftermarket one but summit list others that are more 28-29.5 lbs with only about 4 options, 2 of which beint steel and less weight. I've checked with ram and such and they don't list many for my combo that match factory weight. Would this be okay for the build? How would the 10 lbs affect drivability and clutch? Thank you!
Light flywheels don't have any place on a 4x4 pickup.
My '76 high boy with a 428 CJ has a stock flywheel and it works fine.
I don't want a lightweight per say, that's why I wish I could find a steel 38 lb like what the stock weight seems to be but off the couple sites I've checked doesn't seem to be much of a option. Thats why i was wondering if 29-29.5 lb steel FW would be a good choice or not. New to clutches so as to how much 10 lbs does to a heavy truck is unknown to me. Hearing about the cast flywheels exploding while offroading and such makes me concerned long term
summit racing RAM-1519 38lbs 184 teeth for 390 they have 1 in stock ,, Mcleod 40 lbs 184 teeth MCL-463210 has to be ordered ,, MCL-463215 30lbs 184 teeth 3 in stock
If you blow up a cast flywheel in a pickup you're a pretty poor driver and you need an automatic. billet flywheels and scatter shields are for drag racers.
Searching by vehicle wouldn't bring that ram flywheel up so I assumed it wasn't working. Did end up going just by FE and found that exact one. Appreciate it. Just looking to learn and make sure I'm doing things right

I've seen alot of near 30 lb flywheels, just don't know what the 10 pound loss would do to drivability
I'm not an expert by any means, however, I do remember reading an article years ago, you know, in those things we used to get called magazines lol and they took a 4 cyl Ranger and put a heavier flywheel in for slow off-roading, giving the engine more inertia... ? The rotating mass was heavier which slowed acceleration, but being heavier it helped with lugging, and keeping the engine from dying when worked at lower rpm's. So, I would surmise, going the other way, lightening the flywheel would have the opposite effect, quicker acceleration, but more apt to stall when lugged..?
