I have a Nascar style 3" exhaust with Pace setter ceramic coated headers and a stage 2 street and strip flowmaster muffler and it sounds awesome. I always get compliments "That sounds Badass" and I gutted my converters. I also opened up my airbox and put a K&N air filter in it. This baby breathes Fire With 14 degrees of initial advance on regular pump gas. It has lottsa power. 5.8L with Superchip!!!
I have heard alot of people "rodding out" their converters for sound, but not a good idea if you live in a place where the test emissions for inspection. It can give more sound, good or bad depending on who you ask, and possably free up more horse power by making exhaust more free flow friendly. I advise you to use good quality glass-packs or muffler though, don't want it too loud.

kilted-drummer, ur a redneck? You don't have to be from the south to be a hill-billy or red-neck, It is just that the south has more of us! My daddy a red-neck married my moma, a hill-billy, what does that make me?

i wanted a deep tone, but not loud for my 95, so i just yanked the muffler and put in peice of pipe in its place. in the future i plan on getting a long *** drill bit and boring a hole through them cats. what you do is all going to depend on if you want loud or deep or both.
i live in NY and i was wondering if i could just run headers, gutted cat, and remove the muffler and replace it with a custom tail pipe?
i know by law i need the cat, so thats why i gutted it instead of removing it. but can i get away with having no muffler and just having pipes?
Like "justoldbobo" says above if you have carbon monoxide checks yearly hollowing out the cats is not for you. You most likely will not pass. I say Most likely because a friend of mines truck did pass with the hollowed cats. How he did remains a mystery for sure. The gentleman above who lives in New York Iwould be nervous if they check emmissions where you live. But I would'nt worry about it until it fails. Catalytic Converters start around $150 if you do not have any connections. Also if you must use one as stated above Use a high flow most newer vehicles do from the factory according to my exhaust guy.

I run all over NY and my exhaust is nice and loud . I have no cats and never had a cop think twice about looking . Besides the fact that everything else is illigal about my truck .
The only issue is the inspection . Not a problem if you know someone with a shop .
AdamK1974-What kind of chip do you have? I have a 351, and would like to buy a decent chip. I would appreciate it if you could give me your info on it(Price, where you got it, performance boost, etc.).
"351Bronco" I must be honest with you The chip I have is no longer available. It is an (ADS) Superchip. This company went out of bussiness a few yrs. back according to the Administrator (Ken Payne). If I were to buy one now it would be a Dioblo or Superchip. Ken is up to date on the biggest gains to be had and by what company. The chip was $189.00 in 1999 and included the chip, octane bar,160 thermostat good for honest 25hp. Besides the chip the headers and 3" Nascar style exhaust make a big difference and opening up the airbox. Mainly letting the engine breath freely which is good for another 25hp.
If you are not towing heavy loads bump up your timing to 14degrees of initial advance. This is free and gives serious seat of the pants power on regular fuel. Also drop a line to Ken Payne He is very knowledgeable when it comes to new performance parts that work well.
Plus chips are better suited for engines that have multiple mods like heads, cam , intake , headers, the works. the reason being that each mod you do the chip needs to be retuned and that gets spendy every time you change something. so its best to do everything first then get the chip.
so anyway, enough talk about performance chips. my posted question was about exhaust for a 79. i live in NY, does anybody know if i can get away with removing my muffler and replacing it with a piece of pipe?
I have run some pretty wild exhaust systems here on the Island and never been questioned or checked by the cops . Like I said before it all depends on your local inspection guy .
I don't think you will be happy with the sound with running a tube instead of a muffler .
I agree with BB94Bronco the muffler is what gives you the patent pending sound like my FLOWMASTER stage 2 street and strip really flows well and sounds great as an added bonus. But I have heard straight pipes on a 1995 GT Mustang and it sounded good but not as good as a flowmaster in my opinion. Just my $.02 worth. Do what makes you happy. But make sure that you use pipe as big as what comes out of your collector or you will not gain very much flow=POWER.
also if you have to much flow and not enough back pressure your low rpm torque will be gone. unless your running a high hp motor. so running strait pipes with nothing to really create back pressure would not be a good combo with such a heavy rig.
Does flowmaster or any other turbo muffler like that make a loud 2 in 2 out muffler. Ive seen the single inlet dual outlet, but i want dual in dual out, and as loud as i can possibly get it and still sound good. I wish the 40 series flow was a dual outlet.
