Maybe the meds talking but would it be better to swap out an over heated worn out 302 for a 300 six or should I rebuild the 302 it is a 4x4 with a five speed manual and won't be driven much just to pull stuff. Or Winter driving
Rebuild or find a Craigslist 302 to rebuild while you drive the current one. How bad over heated was it? I've had mine so hot it shut off while driving on the highway. I popped a water pump gasketand it speed dumped the whole cooling system before I knew what happened. And it was in rush hour to boot. So by the time I could get safely off the road, she wouldn't run even with foot feed.
I will put it this way, 30 minutes later it wouldn't turn over to pull on the trailer I had to winch it. But it did start SLOWLY about 50 minutes after the initial stall.
That was 5ish years ago....maybe more. And she still runs pretty good for almost 330k miles.
300 has more low rpm torque. 302 has more high rpm torque and hp.
so the 300 will have more low rpm grunt, but the 302 will have more high rpm power.
i like the 300. most others go for the 302.

According to Fords own brochures, yeah the 302 makes more power higher... but it shows the same torque at 2000 if you look at the graph.
and that is why i like the 300. it just pulls all day long, and runs forever.
i have seen quite a few 300's with over 400,000 miles on them still working every day.
i have only seen one 302 go over 300,000 miles, and that needed the throttle body replaced once, EGR circuit cleaned twice, and a valve seat relap at 290,000 miles. E4OD trans was all still original too, as i did service on it every 30,000 miles. both original owner and the druggie who bought it after would bring it to me every 3000 miles for oil change and whatever service i said it needed they both said do it without asking.
it was still running when parked when the second owner went to prison for drugs for 7 years.
his wife at the time stopped paying for his storage locker and scrapped the van three years into his "stay" it has 365,000 miles on it the last time i serviced it, about a month before he went away.
