The only thing my 55 had was between the front rock guard and the fenders. It was some kind of buffer material.
I do not know if that was original or not, but the rock guard sure did not look like it had ever been removed.
The same applies to the rear fenders. No welting between them and the bed side.
rear fenders to bed side got a small amount of anti-squeak. Actually the top of the inner fenders to to front fenders should get a small amount.
door inspection covers got it as did the running boards to rear fenders. Front gravel pan to fenders and air deflectors too. I put the stuff everywhere that 2 body panels meet but not so much that it squeezes out and makes a mess

What material did they use?
The stuff I removed from my rock guard looked like some kind of butyl tape.
