Like the title says my small brain self ordered the wrong tuner and now stuck with a wrong tuner. I ordered a tuner for a AWA4 when in reality I have a ATA2 code pcm. Already tried putting in a return request but they rejected it.
What can I do ???
For info on the tuner, I ordered an Edge Revolver 6 pos tuner. I tried running it but when I clicked on tune #2 (high idle) it revved up to 2k rpm and stayed there for some odd reason ???? It’s installed right and I am worried of running it on the 50hp tune since it reacted insanely weird to the high idle. Definitely thinking of getting another pcm at this point
Can't the vendor just reflash the chip for the proper code? Even if you have to pay for that, I don't see how that would be more expensive that buying a whole different PCM.

they won’t even take it back for an exchange!!! I bought it from riff raff diesel and not edge tuners themselves

Usually electronic items can’t be returned but you might reach out and email Riffraff Diesel and Edge to see if they will re-tune the chip for you. Maybe they can help you out.
If I am reading the PCM chart correctly you ordered a 49 state Federal PCM but you have a California truck. Difference is GPR vs GPCM.
So to confirm, you have a CA truck? Are you in CA and will need to pass smog?
Yeah it’s a CA truck but it complies to federal emissions so it never came with a cat so it doesn’t need to get smogged in CA. I thought it wouldn’t matter since this truck doesn’t need smog and was gonna run the tuner but afraid of that tune killing my 7.3

Never heard of this. Lots of trucks didn't have cat's but still have to be smogged if 1999 and up!

Not mine !!! It complies to federal emissions of medium duty trucks of 1999 and not to State emissions. It’s actually super common to see with old fire dept, city or school trucks that were not made to comply with emission standards of the state just federal. My old boss currently has a 04 duramax that doesn’t require smog neither! Has no cat, egr or anything at all!!! It’s not common but I do see it a lot in my line of work. If only I knew this much about tuners for these !!!! Hahaha

No problem, I thought they all complied with fed standards because they have no other smog devices on them. But if it was built for fire or something like that, that is the first time I have heard of that. Lucky you!

Welp I'm confused. If the truck is built to Federal specs not CA specs, it should have a GPR and take the AWA4. If it instead has a GPCM like CA trucks, then it would take ATA2. If I'm reading the pdf right. Take a look under the hood and see if the truck has a GPCM, see pic below. I nabbed the pic off the web so ignore the text, just showing the GPCM which is the finned aluminum box with green and black connectors. Then we know whatcha got.
All that said IIRC there were some early 1999 CA model Excursions with a GPR. So we're back to taking a peek under the hood.
Is the truck registered in CA?
Your description of the high idle sounds like operating as intended. High idle tune simply sets idle at a predetermined RPM. Mine is 1100, many use 1200, and I guess yours is 2000. And that's all it does. Switch to it after starting on very cold start to warm up quicker, or when jump starting a car with a dead battery to crank up your alternator output. But you cannot drive in a high idle tune as there is zero throttle control. It's just high idle.
Dave, mine is an e99 built 9/98 and has the gpr from the factory! So trucks do have them in California also in the early years. That is why the Fed thing caught me off guard. I never heard of this except for public vehicle's. Bought I would of thought when registered they would have to smog them. They must of slipped threw the cracks!

I don’t have that glow plug control module just the two relays. I’ve never seen a 2000 rpm high idle before though! Even for a pto that’s kinda fast! Is there anyway to bring it down? My stock high idle is 1100 rpm but when using the tuner it shoots to 2000 rpm and stays there. Obviously I am not trying to drive with it on high idle but I am afraid it’s gonna be tuned differently on the tow tune and could blow up. I am new to these powerstrokes and only worked on IDI’s so i’m not sure what could go wrong with a wrong tuner??? So I apologize if I sound so dumb.
also yes the truck is registered in California and the PCM reads ATA2. Build date says 12/98 too! So it’s not an early 99
If you got gauges to go with that tuner then what can go wrong that will kill the engine during a short test drive? Seriously I can't think of a scenario that wouldn't be averted by simply keeping an eye on exhaust temps. It's not like the injectors will become suddenly possessed and start spinning around in their bores vomiting diesel and hydro lock the engine... They can't do that right? We might need a priest.
