Bought my Excursion probably 6 months ago, immediately changed all the fluids. Noticed the oil seemed to be to high on the dip stick... but just thought I was not seeing it correctly.
Changed oil again today.... oil to high on stick.... so I got to checking and sure enough the dipstick is NOT the correct Ford # 1C3Z-6750-AA for a 5.4L, BUT a F81E-6750-JA which is longer than OEM should be.
Anyway.... beware when you buy an old Used vehicle.

I have nothing to contribute, except that your signature referencing 7.3's is accurate.
