Hey folks. I need a little help with my distributor install.
I bought a 74 f350 with a 360 and it had an hei distributor on it. the hei distributor looks cheap and has no brand-name anywhere so I can only assume it's a cheap-o. I want to run the duraspark system and I already have a box with the blue connector, new distributor wires, cap and a coil from a 79/460
I need help wiring the box up and also I need to know what other parts I may need besides a duraspark distributor.
And what year distributor should I order?
This truck had contacts so there's only the one brown wire in the truck wiring harness.
These diagrams may help. If you are using a blue grommet box, I think the 76-79 diagram is what you need.
It probably doesn't matter too much what year distributor you get, if going remanufactured. They are all probably built to generic specs, not year & engine specific like they were when new.
If you can get any of the ignition wiring harness out of the 79 460, I'd grab as much of that as possible as well.
76 was the last year of the FE engine family, and 76 was the first year of the Duraspark II ignition, so that narrows down your choices. A 76 360/390 distributor is the only one you want, or will work for your application. With the wiring diagram above and the correct connectors, you should be able to make this a plug and play swap.
I just removed a blue duraspark for a HEI conversion. The main thing to pay attention to is that the white wire from the ignition source goes to the red wire on the duraspark and the red wire from the harness goes to the white wire on the duraspark.
the plug is biased so you should only be able to plug it in one way.
from there, there should be a harness for your distributor that plugs into the duraspark.
let me know if you need this harness. I just happen to have one laying around not being used.
