need help with distributor

my friends and i recently replaced my distributor because of no start, truck just turns over, afterwards it went out again, so we replaced it again and it ran like a champ and started fine, but now we are having the same problem. its an 87 150 with the i6 4.9l. we have checked all the wiring and replaced most of the ignition, it keeps pointing to the distributor. so should i get another distributor, as in bigger gears or what? i am at a loss but thought i had read somewhere that a different style than the original would help. if anyone has any ideas it would help us out alot. thanks ya'll
