Reverse synchronization

Reverse synchronization

I have a 3 speed manual. Do these transmissions have a syncro on reverse? I have read some say you need to be at complete stop. Or put it in forward gear before going in reverse.

It depends on which transmission you have. The original 3 speed transmissions in our trucks were only synchro'd on 2nd and 3rd. First and reverse were not. So yes, it's best to come to a complete stop when shifting into either gear to prevent that nasty grinding sound.

Seems like most times I have to double clutch it to go into reverse. Not always but a lot of the time it likes to have me use the clutch again.

I do not believe any trans used in any 50's Ford truck had a synchro reverse.
My 2001 Honda didn't have a synchro reverse. I consider synchro reverse to be a fairly uncommon thing.
