Ok so we just bought and drove home our excursion. 2005 v10 motor. My husband pulled the spark plugs and one was a thread cert? One refuses to come out. He's mad. Says the motor is toast. I'm of the impression it drove a 4 hour trip home and most likely fine as it gave 0 issues. He says new cylinder head now. Wanting to know yall opinions?

Welcome to the EX forum!
Well he could get a new cylinder head……………but that’s up to him. Or he could properly fix the 2 questionable plug holes with one of the correct repair products. The top rated repair options are from TimeCert, Lock-N-Stitch and Cal-Van. If the head has already been repaired by an inferior insert (they should not come out!) these companies (at least TimeCert) offers an oversized insert for the previous damaged hole. If the EX drove perfectly fine on the way home, the motor certainly is not toast. Can you post up a picture of the plug with the insert that came out, there are a few cheesy repair options out there unfortunately. If you have a local shop that you have used and trust give them a call as they are most likely familiar with the correct repair for these spark plug hole issues, unless you want to invest in one of the kits and do the repair yourselves as it’s not a very hard repair with the correct tools.
These repair kits are good and the inserts stay in the heads permenantly.
I will get a picture tomm and thank you for the detailed post!! He is a mechanic and is pretty pissed. But, we all know they're is more than one way to solve an issue, and I'm being positive... so I'll get out there tomm and get a picture as it's 9pm here.
I had a similar issue after buying my Ex years ago. I used a Cal-Van kit on the bad cylinder. It was super simple to do and I have had no issues 20,000 miles later. These heads are notorious for blowing plugs and the repair solutions are well known and effective. I felt the same as your husband when I discovered the same thing when I went to do a spark plug change after purchase. Once I researched the issue and fixes, I calmed down quickly. Frankly, I considered preemptively doing the rest of the cylinders, but the two under the cowl are a beast.
It is the whole Triton line of engines with aluminum heads that can have this problem.
I repaired our Excur that had a #3 blowout with a TimeSert kit and minimal other tools in a campground.
I carried the kit because I also have a 5.4L 2003 Expedition purchased before the Excur.
The Excur had 104K with factory OEM plugs and now has over 50K on the repair with no other issues.
Changing the plugs every 50K and torque them to 25 ft-lbs will keep them from working loose.
My guess is the thread cert will be a heli coil and TimeSert carries a larger insert for fixing heli coil repairs.
Is the one that refuses to come out the spark plug or a repair insert?
