SoCal Glass Install

SoCal people: where’d you get your glasswork installed. It’s a bit over my skill set and I’m not keen on breaking any glass. Looking for front and rear window. I can do the sides and wing vents.

Not in your area but in CT when I lived there.
I hit a few glass places to ask questions about flush mounting glass and getting it installed on a project car.
For a price they would come out to the house to install.

I have since moved and I ran into a guy replacing a windshield in a parking lot and I asked him. He said no problem and gave me his card.
That was over 6 years ago, now there is a guy in the car club I belong to that dose glass and he said he could do it.
Thing is where you want it done, can you drive the truck and where is the glass your place or need to get it?

Where I live there is only one glass shop. I asked him about replacing my windshield and he said No Way. cause it's got the stainless trim around it and he's afraid of it. And wouldn't you know that the only piece of glass that's got a problem is the windshield. SMH. If you find someone to do it tell them that the glass goes into the top first ,then the bottom goes in. If you want to see it done. Go to you tube and type in AutoRestomod. They have I think it's a 1972 F-100 with the trim. It's about a 45 min. video but they do get the glass into the truck.

In so cal you should have hundreds of companies to choose from. Heck here in eastern Nebraska I could probably name of 10 companies locally that do glass. I've got a great dude here that is a one man band. He does Ferrari's to big rigs.

When I did mine I called several glass companies, and when they said they wouldn't touch it (no surprise there), I asked if they could recommend someone, or "knew someone who knew someone". Two of them turned me onto an old Street Rodder guy who made House Calls, and he did a fantastic job.

Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is, screw the reviews on the interwebs, and get a word of mouth recommendation from an actual person.

If I remember right he cuts out the part about installing the trim... Just says something along the lines of " That was a chore"! I'm going through this right now, Tried putting the seal on windshield first, then trim... Now trying trim in seal off the windshield... what a ****!!

I just finished doing this two days ago on mine. It honestly is not a tough job at all if you get the right tools. Cut them out with a razor blade and clean the pinch weld and glass. Takes maybe an hour to do. I recommend let the seal sit in the sun for 30 min prior to warm up. Makes it nice an pliable for the job. Then the install took around 2-3 hours maximum for the seal and windshield. Just make sure you have someone to help you out to apply pressure. With these it goes in relatively easy, you just have to take your time and finesse it once the lip is over to make sure it seated properly. It's a very tight fit so I didn't use any sealer, seems like a lot of people don't. Blasted it with the pressure washer and no leaks. The rear window is much easier since it doesn't curve. I would start with that one first to build your confidence.

Here are the links for the tools I used.

I know you said it is above your skillset, but if you have trouble finding someone, I would say go for it. It is not a tough job. You just gotta go slow with it.

I've asked this question many times and in different ways, and I know it's me not communicating correctly.... BUT has anyone got the trim in the new seal properly??!

Seal on windshield first?

Trim on seal first then on windshield then on truck??

Educate me my friends cause it's kicking my azz!!

The glass guy who is afraid of my truck. Told me that you put the trim into the seal then put the windshield into the truck by first putting the Top of the windshield onto the seam then work the seal down until you have the Bottom of the windshield onto the seam. He told me that if I would buy the seal that doesn't take the trim he would install my windshield. I don't really wanna do that , but if I have to I guess that's my only hope. But what am I gonna do with the seal that takes the trim that I already have.?

So it IS a pain in the ***! Not just me. LOL. Thanks for the reply.
You could sell the trim seal, I'm gonna use another one in the future as I have a replacement cab in the works, and not sure if I'm gonna be nice to the old one when removing or just cut it out.

Yes. The trim goes in the seal, the seal goes on the glass, and the glass goes in the truck. If you have a crappy quality seal (my glass guy hated anything but Dennis Carpenter seals), it will make the job all that much harder.

I watched him do my '68, and lent him a hand when he asked (only a couple times), but he still struggled with it a bit. I think the top has to go in before the bottom, but it's been 4-5 years now....

And he did use a sealant of some sort.

Mine doesn't have the trim so I honestly can' speak to that. Definitely would not have enjoyed having another piece to cram into there during the process as you are really massaging it to fit.
