I like your idea, and all but, why not just pull the truck in forwards? Protect the hood from hail and weather damage.

Well, I once give that thought. There's only so much room in there side to side and by backing the truck in on the low side, and whatever (Mercury G-M usually) is on the higher side is pulled in, easy to leave plenty door room for the driver to get in / out with no doors banging the other vehicle. I put the carport there for the red truck, and something else. I have markers inside to "line up on" when parking it there and is a dip where the rear tires set so it will set there even in neutral with no brake on, but I put it in park. That awning extends outwards nearly 3 feet, enough to protect the front from harsh weather too. It's had some big snows on it too, I built it sturdy, is cantilevered a ways in too.
