94 F150 Cluster problems

94 F150 Cluster problems
Hey all,
I'm new to the forum and have been reading alot of very informative posts on here tonight looking for an answer. I'm actually a GM guy, worked for the local GM dealership for years and know them pretty well, but most of my family drives Fords, but still do not know alot about them.
A friend of mine brought over his truck tonight for me to try and fix--it has guage cluster problems, no speedo or odometer, the fuel guage and oil press guages are inop, I'm not sure about the temp guage yet, it's pretty low on coolant. OK, it's a '94 F150 4x4 w/302 and 5 spd. Is this a pretty common problem? There are no blown fuses that I can find, when you turn the key on the guages do actually move, but not correctly and the odometer doesn't even show up. I did find out from reading past posts that it is run off the rear axle instead of the trans so maybe I can check that tomorrow to see if any wires are loose. I checked the trans and t-case wiring and it all looked okay. I've did a search on "psom" and didn't find out alot--stupid question, but what does "psom" stand for?
Anyway, sorry for being so long winded.

Could be a bad ground for the instrument cluster. According to the diagram the ground(H) controls most components to the inst. cluster. It is a blk/wht wire(s) located behind bottom of right cowl panel. This ground also feeds the Speedometer/ODO as well.
