Primer

I need to paint the cabs on 2 OBS F series trucks. Not enough shop space to leave the truck in till I’m finished. I need to sand and prime parts, like hood, fender, top, etc. prime them and then park the truck back outside till next time. Do I have to use the same primer for the temporary prime or can I use another primer (even aerosol ) and then prime over with the good stuff?

Why not use the right primer right away? Once it is dry, if there is a concern with rain or snow, cover the truck up.

If I just get time to do one fender or the hood, I hate to fire up the paint gun, paint the fender, then clean up the gun. I would use an aerosol can for the pieces, then reprime the whole thing.

OK, I think I understand. So you want to use a spray can primer, then later use a better primer. You are only as good as the surface you are going over. So putting good primer over some cheap primer is not going to work for long. Once you have a spray gun set up it doesn't take long to spray a lot of parts. I get the space constriction thing as well. Painting today is like chemistry class. So many different products doing different things. It would be good to talk to a supplier to see what they suggest. Others will also be around shortly to help and give advise.

Yes, it does not take long to spray the whole cab. May take a month to get it all sanded. Will have at least 12 rains in March and April.

What’s the best way to remove pin stripe tape and 4x4 decals? Heat gun? Will it melt the bonds underneath?

There are adhesive removers that work excellent. I have used a product called "Rapid Remover" which is used in the vinyl wrap sign industry to remove clear bra from my vehicles.

Heat between 200 - 250°, if it's our glue, will soften and peel. But the vinyl is likely smoked and will only come off in little pieces. The above, or similar, can also work, or both. Gonna be a PITA in any case.
