Paint ?

I am slowly restoring my 77 F150 truck and I will be painting things in stages. For example I will 1st work on the front fenders, then the hood, and then cab and I am wondering what type of primer to use that can be left for a time before the top coat is applied. I plan on using a single stage top coat for this project, which I have not yet purchased. I currently have some Eastwood Etch Primer and some Dupont High build primer at my disposal, but I was not sure if I can leave the parts that have been primed with either of these primers for any length of time until I am ready to top coat them. What are your opinions on what I am planning to do? Thanks.

I'm not a painting expert, but, it's my understanding that most primers are act like a sponge and that only epoxy primers should be left open to the elements for any extended period. Epoxy primer would have to be scuffed up before top coated if it has cured more than a couple days. The problem with top coating latter is that the primed surface can and will absorb dirt, greease, oil, etc. If these are not removed you run the risk of a poor bond between the primer and the top coat. The result is not a very pretty sight.

The only way you could avoid water absorption is by using a two part epoxy primer. Example would be PPG DPLF Epoxy Primer. The primer can be recoated any time up to 1 week. After 1 week you must clean the surface, sand and reclean before top coating.
