Give Donald Bland at DRB Machine and Fab a call. He’ll rebuild yours with good quality parts, install a very nice lower bearing, and return it to you painted and better than new. The guy really knows his stuff. It cost me about $600 but was worth it.
Funny you say the ignition switch is in the dash, on the 73-79's it is always in the dash. Did not go into the column until 1980. Anyway, what is wrong with yours? Broke t/s switch, no horn, busted wheel, trashed horn insert? Are the inner bearings loose, is the shifter broke or have lots of play? Maybe you can tell us and we can have a suggestion on what part to replace.
Yes pretty sure you need a 73-76 (?) 2wd w/p/s set up, with the skinny horn pad. The safety neutral switch is on the top side of the column, which puts is under the under the dash and so is your wiring for it and the reverse lights. One from a late year made 77 to 79 the NSS/reverse lights is on the side of the transmission. And some of the cover plastic is different.
Depending on your set up, I bet you have the metal, clip on lower cover? And the 78/79 has the screw attached plastic one. And again depending on the set up you need a short or long collar if you do the swap.
If you swap in a used one, you might be having the same problems. If you get the few parts you need and repair yours yourself, at least know its internal condition.
