Been thinking I have a hole from rust in my 1997 crew cab and wanting to fix it during the summer or sometime sooner. Pervious owners had a anntena on the roof about between the front and rear seats. Thinking of either just weilding sheet metal or getting a rear sliding window from a same year truck and using it as a sun roof. Wanting the pro and cons and if the window will be able to be sealed when shut.
thanks for any insights

I've never seen a sliding rear window that was water-tight.
Of course there could be one out there, but I've never seen one!

I was thinking of using some type of sealent around the edges. Only issue I think of is the area it close and open thinking maybe like some plastic that would over it when it rains? And water drainage since probably won't be perfectly fleshed with the rest of the roof.

That's one of the places where they leak, where the two pieces of glass come together.
The other is worse, and that's the channel that the glass panes slide in. Can't think of any way to seal that one up.
If you really think you need to cut a hole in the top of the cab, maybe look around for a used sunroof.
That’s your best bet, fix the hole, and never cut a hole in a perfectly good roof.
in 2010 ford truck they cut a hole in a brand new roof for the satellite antenna, guess what…it leaked from the factory.
if you want leaks, cut a hole.

Yeah good point have asscess to one that's close to free thought I get some pro and cons of a sliding one. Think one that's dosent open might be better?

Yeah that actually what caused the rust hole in the first place some kind of antenna found it funny how exact some problem you've mention is what caused it.
Cut away rust (making the hole larger). De-bur and paint hole and over-lapping sheet metal patch. Glue the patch down with 3M 5200. It takes a week to cure, but it will last close to forever.
