Question '02 Excursion 7.3: Recovery Hook install question

my Ex came without recovery hooks, but with the 3 bolts in place.

I got the hooks from Ebay, although the only source that turns up in a search for that part number is... Ebay. However, Ebay assures me that Ebay sold me the right parts.

The existing bolts don't thread into the threads in the hooks more than a couple turns... makes me think they are Metric vs. Freedom Twelfths or some such (see photo).

The complete hardware that was pre-installed in my truck is shown in the 2nd photo. I assume this was put in place by a PO. It's grade-8 hardware.

So, I have three questions:
1: does it look like I got the right hooks? (the bolt holes line up with the holes in the frame)
2: am I right in thinking the bolts are simply the wrong size?
3: do the bolts thread up into the hooks from below? or, do they thread in from above, and then use nuts underneath? (that seems strange, but the other Ex in my neighborhood has boltheads on top of the hooks, not nuts or bare bolt thread. (they are a different style hook than this one, so I'm clutching for clues)

Many thanks

01 and up came with this style of tow hook I believe. The bolt spacing is probably the same. Your bolts do not look original either..

I just went out and looked at both my excursions. Both are 2000. One has the rings like in your photo BigFatGuy and they are inside the frame with the bolts coming up through from underneath and engaging the threads in the hook plate ( in other words no nuts).
The other ex has the hooks like 01 excursion linked to on eBay and they have bolts and nuts like in your pic.
So I'm thinking you must have originally had the hooks like in the eBay link. I think I'd just go to the hardware store and get the proper bolts in grade 8 for the hooks you have.

So, turns out, the threaded holes are M12 - 175, and the proper bolt would be about 35mm long to just sit flush when bolted in from below. Metric grade 10.9 is the same caliber as 'merican Grade 8.

The bolts installed in my truck were 1/2" grade 8.

I couldn't get the proper length, but I got some long enough for me to also put a locknut on top with a washer (while being careful not to unscrew the bolt from the hook while driving the locknut)
