Ford flatbed rack hardware bolts.

I went to the local Fastenal store today. I wanted to see they could get bolts like this if I needed any. They hold the rack hardware on the rack boards.

It looks like a carriage bolt with a bigger flatter head. It is called a step bolt. It is ⁵/¹⁶ coarse thread. 70¢ each. They also have the square nuts. I have 12 of them , enough for the 4 pieces of hardware I have. If I build more racks I know I can get some now. I guess I'll try to paint the heads silver.

I didn't ask him about bolts to hold on the boards. Originally they were held on with rivets. So I'll need small bolts of similar size instead. A member, whose name escapes me now, here with a nice 56 F350 used small bolts with acorn nuts to attach his boards to the stakes . It looks real nice.

Jeff Lee is the owner of this beautiful 56 F350 I made mention of on the above post.

Close up of his acorn nuts on his stake pockets.

Pic of the rivets I have replace to attach the new rack boards to the stakes.

You’ll have to make a trip down here to Paul B’s. I need to send you a text about side boards.

Does he have metal stakes? And all the hardware?

Funny story, Dennis. Last week I was at an Amish welding shop. I bought a small piece of steel to patch the one rusted area of my bed.

His name was Isaac Stoltzfus. I said "my name is Abe Stauffer, a good Pennsylvania Dutch name. I'm from Lancaster county." This young Amishman, who was born in Clinton County after his parents fled Lancaster, says, "do you know Paul B?" I said "I was born and raised just several miles from Paul B. Zimmerman's hardware store.

Abe, I did not have the luxury of having the steel stakes and had to use wood instead. I used off-the-shelf carriage bolts, picked from the box at a well stocked local hardware store. The specific bracketry to lock the original style head and sideboards is / was available on line in 2011.
