Hey all...I have a 1996 Expy which has run great, and still is, but the brake warning light has been going on and off for the past few days now. Interesting thing is, I can be at a complete stop with engine running and the brake warning light is not on, then when I accelerate, the thing comes on. At first it was more intermittant, but now it comes on and stays on for a long time. Brakes seem to be working fine, but who knows.
Also, my termperature gauge doesn't seem to be working properly. It seems stuck in the cold position even when I've driven for a half hour or more. Then what it will do is suddenly rise about half way up then quickly fall back down to cold again. Is that just the gauge itself that's messing up or could that mean I need to change a thermostat? Let me know what you think and thanks.
As far as the brake light, ussually means there is not enough fluid in the master cylender. How long ago did you do a brake Job on it? You have to be carefull when addin fluid dont fill it to the max line if theres more than 10k on the brakes go about half way, other wise when you push the pistons out to replace the brakes fluid could shoot out of the resevor. It could also be that your parking brake is loose (I had that problem sometimes the light was on sometimes not but there was noticable play in it turned out i needed new brakes) check it if theres play its ez to adjust look on the drivers side you will see the adjuster, or it could just be the sensor on the parking brake is messed up. As far as the tempature, does it move at all up in temp? The most likley cause is its the T-stat, there ez to replace your self and you can get one at auto zone for 5 bucks plus 1 dollar for the gasket 195 is what should go in, auto zone should tell you. I would try that first since its so ez and cheep and if that does not work there is a temp sending unit right by were you put the t-stat in, with a wire comming out of it, replace that if the t-stat does not fix the problem but i think its the t-stat. Just follow the upper radiator hose and were it goes into the engine is were the t stat is just remove the 3 bolts that go into the engine and you can get at the t-stat, put the new one in with the bigger part of spring part into the engine (you will see how the old one is when removed), just remember to drain the coolent below the t-stat if you not going to do a flush, other wise it will make a mess when the t-stat comes out....GOOD LUCK let us know how you make out
