Hey yall. I have this excursion. It has the 5.4L. I need to replace engine and transmission. Other than those two it has a great interior and exterior. I got it for free and was wondering what engines or trans I should go with. I don't want to spend a lot of money on it and didn't know if it was even worth it. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Would get into a lot of $$$$ to change to a different engine on a 20+ year old vehicle, especially being its appears to be 4x4.
What was wrong with original engine & Tranny ? Sure they are really messed up ?
Not exactly sure what’s wrong with engine. It does have oil leak that causes fires. Person who last drove it said it was the gaskets. It was a timber company vehicle.
While I was trying to jump it to see if it would even turn over the transmission ended up leaking fluid through the trans dipstick.
If it is an easy fix for something that’ll be reliable for a long time then I am most likely down to keep the original 5.4. But I know those have a lot of problems. It is 4wd. Just trying to get some insights. I love the truck and how roomy it is. Interior is in great condition other than carpet. It has around 222,000 miles on it. It has been sitting for 8 years, but it drove to where it ended up. I was able to get it to fire up a little bit after using ether in throttle body.
I currently have a 1999 Tacoma 2.7 with 117,000 miles and a 2012 Ram 1500 with 125,000 miles and this would look good sitting beside them if I can get it running.

Did the fires from the oil leak do any damage to any of the wiring?
Is it pretty much rust free? It looks like you are in NC?
The easiest and cheapest replacements would be another 5.4 with a 4X4 4R100 trans from a donor truck. Next up would be a V-10 with a matching 4R100 (they are different from the 5.4 trans) from a donor and you would also want the under hood wiring harness for the 6.8. Going to any diesel engine would be much more expensive and complicated.
Considering he’s starting with a free Excursion , he could have a dang nice Cummins swapped ride all-in for $10k, even cheaper if you want to cut a few corners and use some used parts here and there.
Considering what you can buy on the used car market for $10k now, a Cummins swapped Excursion at $10k is a freaking steal.
