I did a motor swap on my 76’ F-150 302 with a 95’ 302. Went to start it for the first time and realized my starter was bad. Got a new one today and it still wouldn’t start. While I was inspecting the starter for the issue I realized the 95’ 302 flywheels gears were not lining up with the 76’ starter. Lucky, I still had the parts truck from the swap and it seems that the bolt pattern for the 95’ starter is the same. Question is, do I need to put the 76’ flywheel on the 95’ motor or can I keep it the same and use the 95’ starter?
The flywheel or flexplate has to match the engine/trans combo, so it it highly likely you have a mismatch in there now.
What trans does the '76 have?
it’s a C4 trans. I’m not sure what trans was in the 95’ but it seems like it’s going to be a C6 since they stopped the C4s in the 80s. What’s the solution?
C4 uses a 157 tooth flexplate in most cases. Is your starter gear hitting the flexplate and not engaging?
Both auto transmissions used in '95 have 164 tooth flexplates so what you need is a 157 tooth flexplate with a 50oz imbalance, the flexplate for '76 302/C4 combo will also not work because the engine imbalance is different, those early 302 motors has a 28oz imbalance.

I originally used the 76’ starter and it worked for a second but nothing after that. I then switched to the 95’ starter and that’s when I discovered it was no good. I found the 157 tooth 50 oz flex plate. Will that be the solution?
