92-97 Cab Compatibility

Well I’m sure this has been covered before, couldn’t seem to find a solid answer. Getting ready to bring my old F150 back from the dead. It’s rough and has been used by family members for the last 8ish years and to say its had a hard life would be an understatement. That said, I’m stupid and have some attachment to it as it was my first vehicle and it has been in the family for 25+ years so I’m going to bring it back to life and make it what I had planned back when I was driving it everyday.

With that out of the way, it needs a lot of body repairs and the cab has plenty of issues. Pending any DMV issues, I think the best course of action is buying a donor truck and swapping the cab over. It is a 1992 super cab. Is there any difference in the cabs from 1992 to 1996, F150-F350?

Thanks, Evan.

Minor differences in the wiring harnesses. Airbags became a thing in 1994(?). OBD2 became standard on f150 in 1996 but not on the f250-f350 unless it was a California truck. F350s usually have cab-marker lights where the f150 doesn't. 1992 trucks still had r12 ac refrigerant. 1993 saw the introduction of the much less expensive r134 refrigerant.
Try to find a truck of the same year and engine, as it'll save you a lot of time removing and replacing wiring harnesses.

so what is the issue..... is it rusted out? wiring? You can use a 1980 cab if you are ambitious enough. There are sheet metal changes in the floors and firewall.... changes that are more or less able to be worked around. But they become a lot by the late 90s. not sure what years are which tho.

Cab: The same basic cab design was used from 1980 to 1996 - the body lines match, the door and window openings are the same, the mounts are the same, it's basically the same cab, other than a few small changes along the way. The most noteable major change happened to the driver's side firewall area - different steering column mounts and the introduction of EFI systems required changes such as round holes for wiring plugs being replaced with rectangular ones and a PCM mount was added etc. A 1996 cab could be made to work on a 1982 truck for example - the body lines will match up, but because of these changes you would have to modify that section of the firewall. The F150 cab will also work for the F250, F350 etc. models.

I hear the 2wd/4wd hump/cutouts/shifter choice can change the layout there, but i have a 2wd so i have no idea whats even under my vinyl. but its simple i hear

I guess I should clarify that I’m planning to use just the shell of the cab and will likely be swapping all the 92 parts into the new cab.

As for what’s wrong, there are lots of cracks in the floorboards, there are lots of drilled holes that were added over the years and there is a good amount of damage in the rear quarter panel but the big issues I have are an aftermarket sunroof that was added I assume shortly after is was first sold that has leaked the entire time it’s been in the family along with the visor and cab lights I added back when I was driving it. The visor is cracking like crazy and I just want to do away with it. A couple of the lights are not properly located in the roof. The roof is the big driving factor for me. As for using an earlier cab, I want to stick 92-97 as I suspect there is little difference in firewall construction vs using an older cab that I’m sure will take a bit of modification.
