Hard Shifting

I have a 1995 Bronco 351 5.8 E4OD. I’ve been daily driving it for 2 and a half years and it has always made a clunk/bang when shifting into reverse, and then into drive. It also will have a noticeable hard shift while going through gears, but not as hard as when shifting from park. It happens about 85% of the time I drive it, every now and then it shifts smooth.

When I got the truck I started out changing the motor mounts and trans mount, and figured I’d change the transmission fluid and filter while I was at it. The speedometer was erratic at all times while driving so I changed the speed sensor in the rear with a new Motorcraft one hoping that would be the solution to both the Speedo and hard shifting. I ended up putting a different speedometer in it which took care of the erratic speed but did not fix the clunk.

I checked the u joints and did not find any play. The truck has 250,000 miles so I replaced the u joints today hoping that would solve the problem but it didn’t. At 250k the new u joints won’t hurt anyway.

I’m running out of ideas aside from it being something in the transmission, transfer case, or rear end. Any help is appreciated.

Edit: I’ve also replaced the MAP sensor and TPS. ABS light is on, and the the OD light does not flash.

Are there any codes stored in the PCM?

Here is how to read them without a code reader: www.troublecodes.net/ford

Replacing the rear driveshaft solved that problem in the ‘94 Bronco. There must have too much slop in the slip joint.

Are you doing any diagnostic testing or guessing at what is wrong? Throwing parts at it will make you frustrated and poor.
