Where to start- gage or sensor

The coolant temp gage on this truck I bought to restore is dead. Just to save time which is more likely on a 97 OBS to fail the gage itself or the sensor? Any tips to see which one it is? Thanks.

yup. short the sensor wire to ground. if the gauge moves the sensor is bad. if the gauge does nothing, the issue is in the gauge or wiring from sensor to gauge.
