That idea regarding adding a small LED light bar under the rear lip of each step rail has some merit, IMO. I'm going to pursue that endeavor, and just wire the relay trigger into the reverse light circuit. Great idea, thanks!
I have to back in to trailers in the dark all the time. I have to do so in some gnarly places with lots of crap in the way.
I have a hard time seeing what is next to the rear wheel area windows down looking out or in the mirrors. I need to
add some light to this area on both sides. I have looked around under the truck a bit and do not see a good place to
mount lights that wont get ripped off or be a pain in the butt to do. Has any one done a side light of some fashion I
could steal the idea from?
Current best 2 ideas I have:
I have a prototype light I 3D printed that will fit like a plug in the end of the receiver hitch main tube.
Find a way to fit a compact LED light into the fender vents to shine down side of truck
I did try several brands of brighter light to fit in the bottom of the door mirror and they all sucked with OEM the brightest
I have a small pod light mounted to each side of my headache rack pointing to the ground. These are wired to an upfitter switch.
If you want actual "side" lights, you can put some in the wheel well. Works great offroad.

If the OP is wanting lights near the wheels these seem to be like good ideas. When I first read his post I immediately thought of the lights in the wheel wells. They can put out a lot of light right at the wheel. Also, at the end of the the step rail would work pretty well too. I have 2 lights from Tractor Supply mounted under my bumper, but those point back, which helps me see what's behind me, but not so much what's beside me. Those lights in the ends of the hitch look nice too, but from the way everyones talking about $$ I didn't even click on any links!
A piece of 1/8" aluminum flat bar from a hardware store and a few minutes worth of work you can make a simple mount that will allow you to aim the lights in any direction you want.
