1988 e350 cat delete

My buddies and I just split on a motorhome, it has a 460 in it and we noticed while driving it it has a bad exhaust leak. Upon inspection we noticed the catalytic converter is rusted through and so are the metal pipes than run to the cat from the smog pump. A new cat for this RV is over $2000 CAD, which we do not think is worth spending on this motorhome. It only has one o2 sensor before the cat, no o2 sensor after the cat, also in our area we do not have vehicle emission testing

I am wondering about just deleting the cat all together. We are not concerned with noise as the muffler will be kept in place.

would deleting the cat cause any codes to appear or for the engine to run poorly? I don’t think it would affect anything because there is only 1 o2 sensor before the cat, but I just want to be sure before we remove it. We plan on replacing it with either a straight pipe or another muffler.

like I said only thing we are concerned about is the engine throwing a code and running poorly, so what do you guys think about either biting the bullet and replacing it, or just deleting it all together. Thanks for the help

ECU won’t notice it’s missing.

$2000+ for a cat??? Does Canada have strict cat rules like California? I see generic cats for a little more than US$100. I’d do that as an attempt to stay on the reasonable side of the law and social conscience.

What’s the penalty if you get caught. Is it worse for law enforcement to see a straight pipe or a hollowed out cat shell? One option is to poke out the matrix - wear protective gear, especially breathing gear - then leave the case in place.

I know right!!?? It was all they had at my local parts stores and I wasn’t sure if there was a cheaper aftermarket high flow cat that will mount into place so that is also an option.

where I live we do not have strict emission laws, just about everyone deletes there diesel pickups so I’m not worried about getting caught, also the fine for not having a cat is only a few hundred bucks I believe.

along with removing the cat I will also probably remove the smog pump with it, no point having that hooked up if there isn’t a cat in place.

thanks for the help

I can give you another option. I did the following last year. Using a universal metallic catalyst converter (200 cells), flange and some 3“ flex pipe/pipe. One of my buddy‘s welded me a perfect fit new cat.

That is a gigantor 909 cat on those old 460s and are expensive
The MH will love you removing the cat but our air will not
I would find a cat online and replace it
The cheaper the better IMO (none of them last forever)
Google search for a 88 MH with a 7.5 catalytic converter and shop
Find the part number of one you want and re shop for it on Ebay (I buy a lot of converters getting cars to pass I/M around here) (new cars, cat death code P0420 or P0430)
Not an enviro, have 8 cars, couple of fire breathers
I would just like to have you keep it stock (like) and save our air.

That one from CarParts.com looks cheap and comes with a gasket, nuts and a clamp

I replaced the air pump on my 88 E150 a couple of years ago. One of the reasons I have kept my emissions working is because as time goes by I feel that the governments will only get stricter on emissions and pass laws much like California where the factory system has to be working on any vehicle. If you remove it all and later need it, it will be very expensive to replace if you can find the parts. My van only has a 5.0 engine in it and I ran it for a month or so without the cats and it did not set any codes. My single O2 sensor is in front of the first cat and on the right side of the cross over pipe.
