I'm in the process of rebuilding my '88 302. PO has taken off Fuel Injection and replaced with carburetor and manifold ... Then ignored the oil leaks and oil changes because it leaked ... In the process ran it out of oil and then "fixed" it by putting 3 gallons of oil in the crankcase 🤦🏼♂️. So today I'm cleaning and I get to the oil pickup screen and it rattled ... The picture shows the largest piece that fell out and I really don't know what it is. The bearings are intact but in poor condition. This metal piece is 9/16" wide and clearly show clean edges at the top of the picture... This is also 1-3/4" long but has been banged up on its journey. It is flexible but brittle with just hand pressure. I can't figure what it could be and just wondering if PO dropped something while changing the manifold ... Ideas ?
Can't see an engine bearing lasting very long without any oil. Rods usually go first, then mains, then cam. At least, that is what I have seen.
I was just reading on the 87-97 page about cams and came across an old post about an engine that part of the cam bearing fell out when he removed the cam ... 🤔 ... Trying to find specs on width before I head to the shop and look again at the cam bearings ... Thank You for answering ... I'll let you know what I find out
Ok ... Just went to look and yes, cam bearing
It is very common to see a cam bearing delaminate like that in an old engine. I've seen that on just about every sort of engine. I think that it is probably caused by corrosion from moisture in the crankcase. What's weird is how sometimes it'll hurt the oil pressure and other times it wont. I've also seen it make noise and other times it doesn't.
