How is changing the ignition and fuel systems to work with a carburetor easier than keeping the current computer system? If you wanted to splurge, you could buy the PimpX computer and tune the SD to work with whatever mods you make.

Yep. I have logged several 100K miles on a couple different trucks with speed density.

if you really want to a odd build slap a turbo on that inline 6. I have a i6 and would like a 8 for my next truck yet everything I keep running into is a 6. So I guess I will just stick with what you got and keep running into.

That's honestly been the recurring thought I've had.

The money spent to 302 carb swap could be saved and used to do a Pimpx computer and turbo setup on the current engine. You could even keep the basic short block as the 94-95 speed density trucks were rated at 205 hp by Ford. Turbo, intercooler, new injectors and aftermarket ecm to tune for E85. Run 14psi and you now make 410-425 hp (through stock manifolds, shorty headers would probably bump that some) and it runs like stock when you aren't in boost, which makes cruise tuning a breeze. Want a little more power? Get a little better cam that Conanski recommends and now you will be in the 450 to 500 hp range and your block and tranny will be the weak links. It is 2024 and making power is far easier than even 15 years ago.

Well I actually just found a 351 roller block in town for 500. Would the 5.0 harness still work or will I need a new one?

harness will work as long as it has the same style distributor. I think 93 and prior used a different distributor. So if it is not the same distributor just get a 94 distributor for a 351. And then you will need a MANUAL transmission 1994 or 95 computer for the 351w.
The manual tranmission engines stayed speed density until 97 unless they were Cali emissions.
On the plus side, Richard Holdener found out that a stock bottom end 351w will hold over 1200hp when tuned correctly lol.

351's weren't really on my radar cause the cost of them locally is usually pretty steep. I just found this one today. Stock everything 5.8

Location?

$500 for a 5.8? Heck, my local yard charges $200 for both engine AND trans (easier to drop out together anyway).. Explorer 5.0s with GT40- and GT40P heads, 5.8s and even 7.5s I've gotten several for of my buddy's' projects. The problem is that they cut the wiring harnesses. I consider ANY junkyard motor/trans as 'cores' and expect to do a full rebuild on them anyway...

4.9s are impossible to kill - in fact, when Ford announced the end of the straight six after the 1997 model year E/F250/350s, UPS paid to keep the production line open for another month just for 'crate engines' for their Big Brown Trucks. BUT the problem with them is that some parts are much more expensive than V8s

351W stroker kits are cheap, especially a budget 393.- 302 pistons, stock 351W rods and a cast 3.85" stroker crank. I used a swap-meet $400 pair of World Windsor Senior iron heads. I built mine almost 20 years ago for my 89 Crown Vic that came with a 351W-Variable Venturi carb. With the proper parts selection, I even got the 393W to pass Ohio's sniffer emissions testing! Mine was used as a daily-driver, and 'back-up' tow vehicle.

My buddy (that received one of the aforementioned junkyard '94 roller-cam 5.8s) also built a 393W for his 220k-mile 5.8 '95 F250 4x4.. a bit more roller cam, Ford Motorsport Z302 heads, headers, and a mass-air EFI conversion. We'll be dropping that one in a few months...

The 5.0L harness will plug into the 5.8L and you should be able to run it on the current PCM.

Roller block. That’s the good one. Price seems steep for a long block. I paid that much for a complete engine a couple years ago.

$200 for a complete engine and transmission is very hard to believe. The u pull place around here wants $400 for a gas engine and $300 for a trans and that is if you decline the 90 day warranty
