how do I know what gears does my X have? and what is this I hear about changing my gears to make up the power I have lost from the lift? and what do I have to do to change my gears? How much does it cost to get it done? I have a V10 with 9in. lift with dual shox and 36" mudders.. thanx
You can read the tags attached to the differentials or axles for the axle & gear codes ... which can be deciphered in a factory service manual. You can also get the codes from the plate in your driver's door jamb deciphered for all sorts of interesting (and relative) information. There's a manual method of determining gear ratio, but I'm not going into that explanation here.
The lift isn't what's affecting your gearing, it's those tires. Change tire diameter, and you alter the final drive ratio. It's simple physics. The OEM tires are around 32" in diameter. Smaller diameter tires give you more torque, but less top end. Conversely, larger diameter tires give you more top end (and ground clearance), but hurt your torque.
How much $$$ does it cost? Beats me. The last time I changed differential gearing was 25 years ago.
Please don't think I'm being at all rude, but I believe you have a lot to learn about your truck. Do some reading on these subjects, and don't believe everything you read in online forums. Heck ... if I were you, I wouldn't even trust me.''Good luck with your off-roading adventure ... and crawl. Real world 4-wheeling ain't about flying through the air any chance you get. It's more about being able to get there ... and being able to get back home safely.
