for some reason, my 4Lo doesn't want to stay in gear. i can put it into gear, but the lever just pops out into neutral. i do have a 2" body lift, and i've been told that the lift will cause the body to get in the way of the lever, so i'd have to cut out some metal to give room for the lever. this does not appear to be the case, however. i checked, and there is plenty of room for the lever, but is just doesn't want to stay in gear.
has this ever happened to anyone? and if so, what was the problem, and how can it be fixed.
by the way, i did take the truck off road, and wheeled just fine in 4Hi and 1st gear. is that bad for the truck?
I had a friend that had a 77 short bed 4X4, not long after he bought the truck(new in 76), it started to pop out of gear while off roading. After a while he had to have someone hold it in gear with their foot. just before he sold it he had found out that the linkage was out of adjustment. So you might check the linkage hope this helps.
What transfer do you have? I recently saw the internal workings of a NP208 transfer that had the same problem. The shift fork is aluminum and has nylon bushings that ride inside it. Well the nylon was work and so was the aluminum. In short it is just "a better idea" cheap design. I have an aluminum transfer in one truck but I also have a NP205 cast iron in the other. Something is to be said about the older cast iron design. Good luck.
Hey there have you gotten your transfer problem worked out yet .
I put a 3" lift in my 1978 F 350 4X4 and had to take out a good 1 1/2" of tim from the floor pan to get it to stay in ..
