whether they get better mileage with their tailgate up or down, it seems like my ext. cab shortbed gets better with the 'gate up....

Actually that's more of a tech question and it has been talked about many times.

There was a test done on here that showed whether or not it did help. Tailgate nets didn't, campers/tonneu covers helped the best, and tailgate down helped very little(.3mpg I think). I believe the test was at highway speeds where it would make a difference.
