How smooth is the idle on your 6.8L? My 2023 has a slight stumble or miss when sitting at idle. It starts and runs fine, pulls strong, etc. It idles at 500 RPM, which seems low. I suspect Ford has chosen some trade-offs and deemed this sort of thing tolerable...
7.3s do the same thing. They have Variable Cam Timing so they adjust on the fly all the time. I've owned two 7.3s and both did it.
Thanks for weighing in. As a former Ford dealership service tech, when I posted this, I was about 90% sure this is the sort of thing they would call normal if I took it in. I am at least 95% sure now...I will watch it and see how it goes.
However, I also notice what sounds like more belt whine than I would expect on this truck, which has me pondering whether a belt is too tight, an idler pulley is defective, etc. I may take it in for that anyway.

They whine...it's normal. My buddy has one that whines at idle...mentioned something about it to our salesman, and he said yeah...we hear that from 6.8L owners a lot. My 6.2L had a sort of whine/squeak at idle too...noisy things.

My 7.3L is quiet as a mouse so far though!
Thanks for that input. I do have to remind myself that despite the sky-high prices of these trucks today, they are still somewhat crude by total automative industry standards. Probably even more so in work-truck trim like mine. I will keep any eye (and ear) on it.
Interesting. The 5.0 V8 in my Mustang does this. At idle a seasoned mechanic would swear it's got a miss in it. You'd think bad plug or coil maybe. But I changed all the plugs with Motorcraft, checked the coils, even replaced some coils, checked the injectors, etc. And it still does it. So I concluded that it's either normal for the design of this engine, or maybe there's a small intake manifold leak.

"Normal" operation is my conclusion right how. If I was attempting to seriously diagnosis it in the shop, I would be looking for a bad ignition system connection or component, idle set too low, or perhaps even a failing or loose engine mount.
Like I said above, it sounds like something Ford has accepted to achieve all of the competing engineering objectives they face today - emissions, fuel economy, performance, and customer perceptions/satisfaction. Guess what takes the back seat?

This is a relief to me to hear this is normal in the 7.3. My ‘23 does it all the time at stop lights and I was worried in the back of my mind that something was already going wrong at 6000 miles. From my experience with my last Fords I upgraded from that were the triton engines, when that started happening it usually meant a coil pack or head gasket was going out, causing the rough idle or misfire.
I don't like it either. Sounds like it is missing. When mine was in for a recall, I had them check into it. "normal"
Even asked if they could adjust the idle speed, but they wouldn't touch that.
I have a 2023 7.3 and it does the same thing..."miss" or "bump" every so often sitting at idle. Especially noticeable while stopped in drive waiting for a light.
