ISSUE The customer may report a water leak from the windshield. This may be caused by a skip or a void in the production sealer somewhere around the periphery of the windshield.
ACTION Apply a bead of Liquid Butyl Sealer (F8AZ-19554-CA) under the weatherstrip around the periphery of the windshield. Refer to the appropriate Service or Workshop Manual for weatherstrip removal where necessary.
NOTE
DUE TO DIFFICULTY IN DETERMINING THE EXACT LOCATION OF A WATER LEAK, IT MAY BE IDEAL TO SEAL THE ENTIRE WINDSHIELD PERIPHERY (SIDES, TOP AND BOTTOM) TO ENSURE REPAIR OF THE LEAK.
It is a '91 f150, which makes me think it's due to age, this is helpful info though, thanks.
I have a leaking windshield, I noticed water drip on my hand on the steering wheel, it seems to be running along the top inner trim. Would it be ok to put a bead of silicone along the top outside of the windshield to seal it off?
DO NOT do this it is exactly what the previous owner did and it just made it hold water making the rust worse.

Oh, phew, I don't see anything slapped on my windshield, (except a failed attempt to fix the crack) it's looking like my best option is to replace the windshield and seal as of now.

mine was leaking same as you described after I pulled it there was a lot of rust to be taken care of hopefully you don’t run into the same problem. A body shop said it would be about $1500 if they did all the repairs and install windshield.

Hell nah, I'll figure out how to use a welder before I pay that much.
Talked to safelite today about the windshield and the first thing they told me was that they wouldn’t install a windshield on a repaint unless it was professionally done. And they also said that that it would have to have e-coat as the primer. I assume that’s the 3m single step primer for windshields because that’s what comes up in a google search. Anyone ever use it? And is it to be applied to bare metal?

I'm not a paint and body guy, but from my understanding, this is e coat. It's factory applied using some sort of electrolysis.
Probably what they're saying is, they want to know what they're starting with, instead of having "mystery primer." These replacement floor panels are e coated.
After some more reading pretty much all sealant manufacturers require 2 part automotive epoxy primer for large repaired surfaces as a base coat and then no paint. The urethane primer and sealant will go directly onto that.
So that’s the route I’m taking. Im sure a super clean surface and epoxy primer is the best route the more I have looked into it.
Ok, I pulled some of the windshield trim off, bent some more and had a hell of a time getting it back on. While in there, I didn't see rust, just dirt, some old black substance, and just about zero weatherstripping.
Now I didn't pull all of it off, so there may be some rust elsewhere, but I'm hopeful its not too bad.

If you didn’t see any rust that’s a good sign. At that point I would just have the windshield replaced by satellite. They will have a warranty also. And the trim can be a pain in the butt, they sell a tool to remove it but I used a seal puller and went under the trim to release the clips and didn’t bend any of it but you have to be pretty careful.
