Hello - hello, this is my first post after spending endless hours reading this forum over the years
I have done a ton of research on ICM replacement for my 1996 F-150 w/ 302 engine. I've owned the truck for about 5 years and the P1351 code has always been on, but had no drivability issues.
Finally got around to check it out and here is where I am at.
The ICM is located on the driver side fender (rather than on the distributor) sitting in a heat sink. The current ICM is grey, and I believe that (1) the ICM was previously replaced as part of the wiring harness clip is broken and (2) I believe that the ICM should be black, not grey. All Data seems to confirm that 1996 F150s are CCM (rather than push start) and my online research generally points to the black ICMs being compatible with CCM while the grey ICMs are not (and will trigger the 1351 code while remaining drivable)
So here is my dead end: Generally, the research points to Motorcraft Part DY-1077 ... However, every online parts store states that this part does not fit my vehicle (and I have seen a few threads with folks stating the 1351 code came back with DY-1077). There are other parts I have looked at: DY-1075 and DY-1076 - but these are grey and the online parts stores also state that these do not fit.
The part that I found which I have the most confidence is: Standard LX241 - which is black, multiple online stores confirm fitment, and product description clearly states "With Heat Sink; Remote Mounted Module"
My issue with the Standard part is that I would strongly prefer to use a Motorcraft part - but cannot find the Motorcraft part # that clearly checks all of the boxes (vehicle fitment, with heat sink, remote mount).
Does anyone out there know the correct Motorcraft part # for this vehicle/setup or confirm that Motorcraft DY-1077 is the correct part (despite what the online parts stores state)
The short story is most parts manuals, including Ford, list the wrong ICM for these trucks. 1993 and earlier require a gray colored Push-Start ICM. 1994 and up trucks require a black CCD ICM. Many of the black aftermarket ICMs are now triggering the same missing IDM signal error code so it is best to stick with a Motorcraft DY-1077 if you can find one.
I ended up heading out to the U-Pull-Upay(out the A..) and grabbing a couple black ones just in case. My understanding is they seldom go bad. Fixed my issue when I did my MAF upgrade
So I have a 93 F150 with an 87 351 swapped in and a 95 PCM with MAF upgrade, with all of this weirdness, I discover quite a bit about the wiring and I can tell you, having the right ICM for the PCM is important, but having the wrong harness between them will cause just as much problems. Hopefully these files can be of some help https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...Z7kah-TdzpHuB3
My 95 4.9 4x4 has a grey fender mounted TFI module too
This will work, but maybe not at peak performance. Might just for fun go pull a black Motorcraft out at the junk yard and see if you notice any difference. Can't hurt.
Thanks, Guys for all of the feedback. Really appreciate it. Crazy that "big automotive" can't give us a part that is a clear solution
It feels like the safest bet is to go pull a black one from the bone yard from a 94-96 .. If I can find a Motorcraft DY-1077 locally I might pick that up and see if it works.
Its been many weekends since March 2023.. but wanted to post the result none the less: The Black "Motorcraft DY-1077" ICM did the trick and the P1351 code turned off permanently after clearing codes (again - this is for a 1996 5.0 with the ICM on the fender with a heat sink)
my 1996 4.9 has a black factory ICM but If I were to find the delphi brand aftermarket ,it is colored grey. they also have grey for the push-start ones from years earlier. Probably to save cost on making them but **** kinda critical... So yeah, I use color when talking about motorcraft because they should be "right" per that, but aftermarket? cross it first
Can someone help me with a push start panel on my 93 f150? I can send a picture of the wires. I'm not sure which wires to use or if I can wire the 2 ignition wires together and which are the accessories wires.
Sorry in advance if I'm on the wrong thread been trying to figure this forum out for the last hour I'm not good with computers. Any help is very appreciated!
