Will the heads from a 1950 239 fir on a 1948 239? Also can someone give me where the shorter head bolts go on the head, I have about 10 short ones and the rest are longer. Thanks in advance for the assistance.
When you say a 48 239, are you talking about a 48 truck 8BA type flathead, or the earlier style 59AB with the bell housing cast in? Those had different water passages and have different heads.
As Merc says, ensure you are using the correct head for the block. The 59A heads have the water ports in the middle, the 8BA block in the front.
As for which bolt lengths go where, I believe you can use the simple workbench trick of dropping the bolts in and ensuring they all protrude from the bottom of the head the same amount - then you know you have all the right length bolts in all the right places.
Generally, yes the 50 heads will swap to 48 8BA/8RT engine.
The head bolts pretty well sort themselves out. I can't from memory tell you which goes where, but.... The head tends to be thicker on one side - that's where the longest bolts go. Put the head on and drop in the bolts so the bolt heads sit about the same amount above their mounting boss, and you have it.
