Mine used to bounce at slow driving speed, and when I hit bumps. The polymer drive gear was worn down. It's an easy swap on a NP205 transfer case. I have no experience swapping the gear on other transfer cases, or transmissions.
It's easy to see how that worn down center would allow the driven gear on the cable to skip.
Good idea! At the very least, it's an easy thing to check. If it's in good shape, you only spent a few minutes and some greasy hands. But if it's bad, it's an inexpensive fix.
