1950 Ford F2 drivetrain colors

I know my 226 6cylinder is red but does anyone know what the original color the bell housing, transmission and driveshafts are supposed to be?

Whatever the assembly plant could source nearest to the plant and the cheapest, most likely black. It only had to stay on the metal until it got out of the dealer's parking lot. Don't over think it. Remember, these trucks were built as tools and to be used and abused like any other tool.

Hello JJ,

Welcome as a new member to FTE.

I've taken apart about 5 of the 226 truck engines with transmissions attached over the years. The proper bellhousing color has me stumped. I've seen at least one that was a very faded rouge red to match the fade of the engine, and another that was an argent silver. The transmissions were painted in a very thin coat of gloss or semi-gloss black paint, my evidence is that after cleaning with detergent there was still still some somewhat shiny black paint in the less-exposed areas that were protected from the elements by grease. The driveshafts are anyone's guess as they were always totally exposed to the elements and whatever color they were was probably washed off within a year after leaving the factory.
The bellhousing and transmission colors might have varied by which model was ordered. You could get with the 226 a T-9, a T-87 or on the F-6 and up models - a T-98. I painted my T-87 and the T-98 I had the color Argent Silver but only because I liked the color and always had silver paint kicking around.
I'd be curious what others on here may have for information.
Tom

I used this paint on my F3's 226 engine. It was a close match to the shade of rouge red and durable. Oh, it was inexpensive too.

Thanks for all the great replies!! When you’re referring to T-87 is that a Ford paint code?

The T-87 is a synchronized floor-shift 3-speed that came as an option for the inline six. It was considered the 'heavy-duty' 3-speed available at the time. It's a very good transmission if you can find one.

The T-98 was a synchronized floor-shift 4-speed.

These different transmissions may have been painted different colors at the various plants they were assembled by.
