I will admit I’m very transmission naive. I can make my way around the engine compartment fairly well, but when it comes to transmissions I’m dumb. This could be completely normal, I don’t know. Any ideas? It’s $180 to diagnose at my local transmission shop, or about $250 just to drop the plan myself and swap in a John Woods valve body that should correct the temperature sensor and perhaps this shifting issue. I am confident I can get that done. I’d hate to spend $180 extra just to find out I need to do the $250 fix. Or does this sound like a torque converter problem, and could the two be correlated?
Valve body and solenoid pack are different components. More testing is needed or its just all a wag. The trans will never shift correctly if it does not know temps.

the extra shift is most likely the torque converter locking up and is normal.

If you have a code and Mark said it needs to be diagnosed, that's what you should look into. Have you tried clearing codes and see if it comes back?
Also, I wouldn't run 2 coolers, not sure if there is a negative effect.

If you want a VB, then get one and see if anything changes. as Mark said it's rare for the sensor to fail

I can diagnose this WAY cheaper than that.

The "shift" you feel in third gear is the torque converter locking. It is working as designed. Nothing to fix there.
