Thinking about doing this until someone talks me out of it ... I have a 1991 F150 302 with AOD and would like to put the E4OD out of a 1990 F150 with the 300 cu in six..... I have both trucks here.... and might eventually put the 300 engine into this 1991 also .... the 1991 is a very clean Florida truck. And if too much trouble then probably going to put in a 5 speed since I have one of those also.... The AOD is dis assembled with pieces in boxes..... I have a great E4OD.... so what should I do ?
The early E4OD's were not Ford's best product. If you elect to go with the E4OD, I would go through it. If you are not good with electronics, maybe pass.
With a complete parts truck you have an advantage over someone who needs to scrounge for parts. As stated if you are not good at wiring, it will still be an uphill battle. Best advice is get an EVTM manual for each model year then start tracking any wiring differences, should be close, but there may be a few gotchas. Keep as much of the original harnesses intact is the best way to go. Adapt the transmission specific wiring to your 1991.
Agreed you should also give that donor E4OD a good thorough inspection instead of tossing it in.
And you'll need a PCM for a 302 with E4OD. The PCM in your truck won't control the transmission, and the PCM from the other truck will only run a six cylinder.
