Question Buibuild date....why so important?????

Am I missing something here or is it really necessary to worry about build dates.
It was my understanding that in the early years, (way back when 6.0 was in its infancy)
there was some mechanical problems with the rocker arms and stuff.
Now all problems that are about the 6.0 seem to be with the computer, don’t get hung up on this.

My point: All engines can and will have mechanical problems, for the NUMBER produced it is rare we hear of all out blow ups. That notwithstanding then the problem becomes the software.
With that accepted as the major issue with the 6.0 then if a build dates is 01/05 it can still have a bug with the computer………………….so does build dates really mean that much. They are working to flash away all glitches.

If it does then all engines will be considered junk, useless, not good, bad to have, tuff to re-sale and so on.

Without the so called “good build date” Which with the way everyone keeps moving the build date to have the “correct one," becomes an exercise in planned obsolesces. This is not logical it is a floating data point.

Well as you can read I probably just opened up a can of worms and a very controversial subject

Lets get this thing going!!!!!

There were a number of mechanical changes made to the 6.0 after 9/29/03(?). Changes to the turbo, fuel rail etc. There is a post somewhere detailing all the changes that were made. Agreed that computers were a component of many problems but why not take advantage of engineering improvements?

Ford has claimed that the driveability problems are all related to software, but Ford made a lot of improvements to the engines installed after September 29 that are unrelated to emissions or serviceability.

Reports from those with '03's and the latest Oct. flash are less power and MPG's. These same negative reports are not being made by people with the newer motor.

Complaints from those with the newer motor are substantially less frequent than even "fixed" older motors.

You have a choice. Get the newer motor.

Ford (IH, the engine builder) puts in changes in the manufacture cycle. Build dates were believed to be important on the initial bad issue of fuel injectors prior to May 03, I think.

Flash revisions are important.

Agreed if you have a choice. but you read in the forum that people do not want the “bad” build dates.
The point of all this is there are not any bad build dates. Except some of the very early ones IMO

Troybilt, welcome to the forum. I hope you will be as happy with your first diesel as I am. I am pleasantly surprised.

The flash everyone is referring to is a software update for the onboard computer. Everything is run by the computer now. This is not unique to the 6.0. When the manufacturer wants to change the programming, it is done with an update. Your computer has programmable read only memory. Flashing refers to loading a new program.

That's the real short answer.

As with most software, when they fix something, they manage to break something else. Sort of like Windows.

Here is another one on software:

If programmers built buildings and roads, the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilization.
