I have a weird noise comming from the drivetrain. I'm unsure what to make of it. It sounds like the teeth in some gears are slipping past each other during acceleration. I was unable to locate where this noise is comming from and it does not do this all the time. I had the wife listen when i drove away and she said it appeared to come from the center of the van. Inside the van it feels like the passenger rear wheel. I have very little experience with drivetrains, but i can do almost everything else as far as repairs are concerned. This is a 94 Aerostar 4.0L E4WD XLT. One last thing, I do know i have a bad U-Joint, but it is doubtful that is the main problem. It might have been the trigger. But I need to know where to start to get it fixed. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
And how come Chilton does not make any books for the E4WD and the AWD Aerostars?????
I have had fair luck within Chiltons online. First I would replace the bad U-Joint. Also check the fluid level in both rears. These may need to be changed out. It is usually easiest to fix one problem to make it simpler to isolate the other.
My son's '68 Torino had a bad U-Joint couldn't drive the thing over 50 miles an hour. Fixed that and found the weight that hung off the tailshaft of the trans had worked itself loose. This added to the problem, but I did not know till after I fixed the Uie.
Ok I had the wife take it in the mechanic this morning. And the mechanic said it was the transfer case. and it would be around 2500$ to fix. Alil steep for the price. So I will either fix it myself or find someplace cheaper to do the repairs. Keep in mind that the U-Joint will still need replacing. Thanks for the manual number I will pick one up later this evening.
Wow, that is steep - too steep. You can find used ones occasionally on eBay for around $200-400, likely the same at the local yard.
Best bet is to rebuild it yourself. Other than needing a way to hold the input shaft when removing the nut, it is a very straightforward procedure. If memory serves, it ran about $200 for a new chain and rebuild kit. The gasket between the TC and transmission is not included and must be purchased from the dealer.
Well it is confirmed it is the transfer case. i did get a second opinion and a much cheaper price. its going to cost about 850 to get it fixed up. which is about what i wanted to spend. then when i get it back ill just finish her up and she will be a s good as new again. thanks everyone for your help.
Ford posted a recall on transfer cases. I got a new transfer case ona 93 4.0 liter AWD, and a neighbor of mine got a new transfer case on a 94 4.0 liter AWD also. I don't remember the specifics of the recall but you might want to ask about it. If you don't want to ask the dealer about it, there are governmental websites that list the recalls and what was involved.
Wow! That would be a good thing. I will have to check it out. That would definitely save me a lot of money there. Do you have any of those website addresses?
Go to the NHTSA.gov website. There will be a recall tab at the upper left corner of the page. You can access the recalls by recall # or by make, model of vehicle.
