When I am driving the van, and I let off the throttle, the van makes a low clunk and then there is a pulsating noise from the rear end. The noise stops when the van is accelerated.
Any ideas?
1997 Aerostar E-4WD 4.0 liter engine.
Blue, extended, with power everything.
a friend of mine just went through this, if the is the same problem.
what happened was, a bearing went in the differential which caused the crown gear (which is a spiral shaped gear the turns the gaer that turns the axle shafts). remove the cover on your diff and see if there are any shavings or anything like that in the gear oil or in the housing.
what my friend did was took off the flange type thing the driveshaft connects to, and took out the assembly in the differential and removed the crown gear and replaced all the bearings and spacers and all the stuff inside there.
this may not be the same problem but its like a $700 job if you take it to the shop and have them do it, just beacuse of the labour involved.
but the bearing and spacer cost all of under $100 total so you save same mega dollars doing it yourself, and its not all the hard, just make sure there is no play in the crown gear.
I would deffinitely second Racerguy's opinion! My van did the exact same thing last week. But thanx to some advice from the guys on FTE I checked out the u-joints before venturing into any large project. All I did was soak the rear and front u-joints with penatrating oil and took the van for a drive. About a quarter of a mile away the vibrating almost completely stopped. The rear u-joint had been seized. The following day I had both replaced. Now the van is smooth again. Good luck.
