Lug nuts: Thin walled or regular impact socket?

Hey Gang,

Shopping impact lug sets for my truck and future travel trailer. I've read that our trucks need a 21mm impact socket, so whatever set I purchase needs to include that. Should I buy a thin walled socket set or regular?

Thanks !

I use a regular one on my truck. Just be aware that different brands have different thicknesses.

if you use an impact get impact type sockets......I've cracked thin walled sockets using impacts. While you're at it get a torque wrench too! Its' important.

Depends on the wheels. I have aftermarket wheels on my RAM 3500, and I have to have the special thin lug nuts along with narrow socket. On my travel trailer, I had to use thin wall sockets to prevent damage on the alloy wheels. Even then I destroyed the plastic socket guard. I swapped the factory lug nuts for thin wheel lug nuts as well. Now I carry two types of thin wall specialty sockets lol.

If your TT has steel wheels, I will still recommend a thin-walled socket with plastic shell because a lot of time the center cap is fat and can rub on the sockets.

Already have 3 torque wrenches (1/4, 3/8, 1/2). Max torque is 250 so I'm good on wheel lugs. I just wanted to make sure I was buying the right thing.

Would this cover all my bases? Travel trailer and truck?

It'd work, but I'd check out a Pittsburgh set from Harbor Freight. For the same price you can get a more complete set with about double the sockets. I haven't had any issues with my Pittsburgh set over the years.

I don't mind spending a little more on tools if I can have them forever and pass them down to somebody when I'm not here anymore. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but originally I was thinking of these to cover all my bases. However, as they are not thin-wall I was concerned I wouldn't be able to use them for both my truck AND a future travel trailer:

I have used a set of cheap harbor freight house brand deep wells for over a decade at this point, no issues with them on any lugs I have thrown them at.

Me too. However, when I got a brand new set of Lariat take off wheels and tires for my XLT, I bought a complete new set of solid lug nuts. Gave the factory jacketed nuts to the guy who bought my XLT wheels and tires.
I didn't want to deal with the inevitable "swelling" or the delaminating of the jacketed nuts in the future.

That is not a bad choice. They are still made overseas so for the money you may be able to find the same thing at Harbor Freight.

I have a set like these

This.... I still have the jacketed stock lug nuts, so use a manual breaker bar since an impact wrench will quickly deform the jacketed lug nuts. Just swapped out to solid lug nuts on our Expedition, so need to add that to the list for the F350 as well.

I haven't taken off my center caps yet; the lugs are jacketed? I figured they'd be normal given they are on super duties.

No idea if it's changed for 2023. But they sure enough were jacketed on my 2022.
