Auto Start/Stop Issue

I tried posting this in the Expedition forum but nobody has even looked at it so I will try here. My wife has a 2020 Expedition Limited with the auto start/stop feature. Twice in the last week, she will come up to a stop light and the engine will shut off normally. But when the light turns green and she lets off the brake, the truck doesn't restart and she gets a message saying something to the effect of "Put In Park, Press Start Button". What is going on that makes it not want to restart in the auto start/stop mode?

Posted this in your other thread too.

You are the first to post that particular problem.

The usual issue is AS/S just stops working because the battery is undercharged. The battery management systems in these trucks can't do catch up like older systems, so the battery never gets fully charged. Add poor battery condition and the next thing is no start at all.

You should take it to Ford or someone with a good code reader and see if any codes pop up.

I will second the dying battery. Replace yours with the largest that will fit, likely an H7. Are you noticing other odd gremlins like jumpy gauges and interior lights that act up? If so that goes further to confirming the battery.

A lot of bad battery issues were reported here when this generation was still new. I would skip Motorcraft and go with Super Start from O’Reily or Napa.

Battery-wise I'm all in on the NAPA top grade batteries. They have been long lived for me, have a decent pro-rated replacement warranty lasting upwards of 7 years. Honestly when/if a new battery lasts 5 years I'm content---anything longer and its a good thing.

I will speculate that there might be something wrong with the BMS (battery monitor) that is mistakenly judging the battery to be OK for auto S/S, but isn't. I will also add a vote for the battery itself.

x4 on replacing your battery. Make sure the battery terminals are tight and clean of corrosion.

That goes for grounding cable from the body to the frame as well. Also, if your terminals are corroded, and the corrosion goes under the insulation, just replace the entire cable as there is no telling how far and how bad it.

Battery

If they battery is 4 plus years old replace it as a starting point. Chances are it would need it within 5 year mark or so anyway.

My second battery is exactly 6 years old. It’s a Super Start. This morning it slow cranked on me and my gauges went into test mode. Tomorrow I’ll go get a new one. I can’t complain, I’ve never had a battery last so long.

I buy recon batteries for my older trucks. The one in the '94 Dodge with the V-10 was bought in January or early February of 2013, and the '87 F150's recon battery was bought in April of 2013. Both still going strong. If fact, my son is driving the Ford to work every day after a deer ran into his Jeep last week.

Thanks all for the replies. I will give the battery a shot. Haven't had any other electrical gremlins and the terminals are spotless, so hopefully it's just a tired battery. Thanks!

The original battery in our 2015 lasted until January of '23 (7-1/2 years). Your mileage may vary. We replaced the original with an X2.
